Pride and Prejudice and AR — 10 Things I Didn’t Understand About Augmented Reality (And Why I Love It Now)

By Cristian Díaz

Elevator Pitch

In a very short space of time, I went from complete skepticism to complete belief about AR. I changed my point of view from “think there is no real-world use case” to “I believe this is the future.” If for you AR feels like a gimmick but you are prepared to challenge that belief, this is your talk.

Description

This session will go over my initial skepticism of augmented reality (AR), characterizing it as a novelty with no real-world application. However, a requirement piqued my curiosity and prompted me to consider a hypothetical point of how AR could overcome its visual limits and improve people’s lives. Exploring the concept of AR led me to uncover a parallel universe of research and connections between computer vision, machine learning, audio, and graphics. I started seeing AR as a tool for access and empowerment, supported by the potential of Apple’s Spatial Computing concept. I will emphasize my newfound love and enthusiasm for augmented reality as a change agent, showing its potential to improve human experiences and reflecting on its influence. We will also discuss the challenges of incorporating AR features into apps, as well as the value of perseverance and drive. My return to my technical roots with a renewed worldview that emphasizes the value of invention. To avoid spoilers, the ending was left out, but it should be exciting and motivational.
