A fresher's guide to DevRel

By Srushtika Neelakantam

Elevator Pitch

DevRel can mean a lot of things. Even though a lot has been said about what the role involves, we seldom hear what it takes for one to be part of a DevRel team. In this talk By the end of this talk, the audience will have good knowledge to decide if it is truly something they’d like to pursue.

Description

DevRel is often a misinterpreted role or job title and from the amazingness that it seems to be, as seen on Twitter, no one actually pays attention to what it truly takes to be a Developer Advocate for a developer facing company. In this talk, I share my insights gathered from having spent the past one year as Developer Advocate and what being in this genre of work requires you to do. Further, the talk will describe how DevRel can mean different things to different types of companies and how more often than not, DevRel involves experienced people, which in no way means it’s restricted to them.

Notes

I’ve been a Developer Advocate at two different companies in the last one year and I’m a Mozilla Tech speaker since a couple of years now. I’ve attended or spoken at more than 20 conferences in the past year and all my interactions with people in DevRel and out of DevRel made me believe that people have this misconception about DevRel being a dreamy job which is all-things-fun and involves least effort . People need to understand what’s true, i.e, what goes behind-the-scenes with those who call themselves a ‘DevRel person’. This talk is also based on my recent blog article, which can be found here: https://medium.com/@n.srushtika/a-freshers-guide-to-devrel-10f0d814111e
