Elevator Pitch
Running into a problem where the only solution is an obscure command-line tool? Or written in a different language than what you’re comfortable with? The talk covers pushing your boundaries, venturing into the unknown and how breaking out of habit can benefit you in the long run.
Description
We often solve problems with fixes, or solutions, that aren’t ideal. This could be a command-line tool that outputs text instead of objects or an SDK written in a language that isn’t your first choice. The solution found often works well if you’re able to integrate it with your current process, but what happens when your goals or needs exceed the capabilities of that solution? What do you do when working well isn’t well enough?
During this session, we will discuss:
- Pros and cons of using found solutions that just work
- How re-engineering solutions can push you to be a better “you”, regardless of the solution’s success
- Real examples of when re-engineering solutions provided value, both immediately apparent and not
- The long-term impact of pushing your boundaries and solving the solved in new ways
Notes
Throughout my own career path, I often find myself in areas where there aren’t many options to accomplish my goal in my preferred method. This has led to the creation a number of open source projects that solve those goals and an immense uplift in my own career path, so I hope this talk will be valuable to those looking to make their mark and break out of any areas where they may feel stuck in their ways. This can be applicable to both new engineers looking for ways to grow as well as seasoned professionals who have developed habits and are searching for new thought patterns to grow further.
