Using Brain Computer Interfaces and JavaScript to Help Children with Mental Health

By Jesse R Weigel

Elevator Pitch

Specifically for this session, we will look at how I, building on the amazing work of Alex Castillo, have used a Brain Computer Interface to build a JavaScript game to help my son, who is eight years old with obsessive compulsive disorder, to recognize his mental state and take steps to improve it.

Description

By using Brain Computer Interfaces with modern web technology, patterns in brainwaves can be detected. Using JavaScript these patterns can be translated into specific events within a web app. This unlocks the potential for a whole new way of interacting with the web. Specifically for this session, we will look at how I, building on the amazing work of Alex Castillo, have used this technology to build a JavaScript game to help my son, who is eight years old and has obsessive compulsive disorder, to recognize his mental state and take steps to improve it.

Key Takeaways:

-You will learn more about what Brain Computer Interfaces can do. -You will also learn how to use JavaScript to read brain data and control web apps with your thoughts. -You will be able to begin using brain computer interfaces to help with specific mental health issues. -You will have a better understanding of the possibilities of controlling the web directly with your brain.

Notes

I am dedicated to continually learning and teaching others, as demonstrated through my hundreds of hours of volunteer live-coding for freeCodeCamp. Through my livestreams I have gained valuable experience speaking to developers of diverse backgrounds, locations, and skill levels. Aside from conveying useful information, I focus on providing positive encouragement and cultivating a welcoming, open environment where my viewers feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their experiences.
