Analyzing the World as a Self Taught Programmer

By Brian Retterer

Elevator Pitch

In the programming world, it can sometimes be difficult to find work when you didn’t get a degree in the field. As a trained sound designer, but self taught programmer, I sometimes feel like an “imposter”. I will show you that even with a non technical background, everything can apply to programming

Description

There are many challenges in life. One of these challenges can come in the form of “imposter syndrome”. I know for a fact that I feel that way many times in my career because I do not have a formal degree in programming. At times, I will run into a problem that I think to myself, “If I had formal training, this would not be an issue” but then I remember, everyone runs into things like this. To overcome this, I always look back at the technical theatre degree to try and find a solution. This talk is all about the way you can apply your “official” training into the would of programming. With examples of non programming jobs, I will show how they could be applied and used as experience for that programming job.

Notes

In addition to the description above, I have been able to apply many different jobs and “twist” it into the skills that could be used for programming. From a theme park greeter who can use their observations skills and turn that into a UX designer, or even an astrophysicist who wants to get into the world of programming who could apply their math skills to the basic ideas of foreach loops.
