Kia ora! Kiwi Ruby is a new Ruby conference being held in Wellington, New Zealand. We’re looking forward to receiving your proposals on topics that interest, excite, and delight Rubyists and the Ruby-curious of all levels.
Our attendees will be primarily Kiwi web developers working in various sectors throughout the country – corporates, start-ups, and non-profits. We hope to see programmers at all stages in their journey as developers, so we’re looking for talks that will connect with programmers at a wide range of levels.
We want our attendees to come away inspired, encouraged, and with a real appreciation for the world-class talent we have here in New Zealand.
CFP Description
We’re accepting technical and non-technical talks of interest to our audience. Do you have a recent project you’d like to talk about? An interesting technology you’ve been using? General thoughts on the state of the Universe? (Just kidding, save that one for the hallway track 😉.)
Still not sure what to talk about? We’d love to hear about things like:
- Working with Webpacker
- Life after developer bootcamps
- Encapsulating side-effects in Ruby
- Common security mistakes you might be making with Rails
- Architecting for scale
- Devops in 2017
- Managing microservices
- Coding for social good
- Self-selecting teams
- Getting your first dev job in New Zealand
Submissions via PaperCall are anonymised. We are committed to crafting a diverse lineup of speakers and talks. A key aim of Kiwi Ruby is to showcase the local talent we have here in New Zealand.
When reading proposals, the review team will consider the following:
- Relevance: Is this topic interesting to an audience of web developers, and in particular, Ruby programmers?
- Novelty and Originality: Does the talk provide the audience with new information? Preference will be given to presentations not previously available to a wide audience.
- Storytelling and Organisation: Is the proposal well organised? Will the audience tune into the narrative? Will the speaker use their time effectively? Will the speaker’s story connect with the audience?
- Bottom Line: What’s the takeaway of your talk? How will the presentation improve attendees’ knowledge, outlook, and inspiration?
Talk length
Talk slots will be 30 minutes, with no Q and A. Kiwi Ruby is a single-track conference.
Travel Assistance
Speakers will get free admission to Kiwi Ruby, and we’ll pay for your travel and accommodation for the duration of the conference.
Accessibility
We are committed to accessibility; we have confirmed with the venue that the seating and stage are accessible to people to mobility impairments. Childcare will be available at no charge. If you have any other accessibility needs, please get in touch with us at kiwi@ruby.nz.
